S Carolina Ave SE
Like those of many of its contemporaries, the main level of this Victorian row house on Capitol Hill was sectioned into several small rooms – a bygone necessity that feels cramped and disjointed by today’s standards. While many of the original elements of this beautiful home were well preserved, the main level was in need of reconfiguration and modernization in order to meet the needs of today’s family and lifestyle needs.
We were challenged to marry the traditional feel of the home with a roomy open concept that would accommodate the activity of a busy family, while at the same time be conducive to entertaining. In addition to these functional needs, we were tasked with an eco-friendly renovation: all appliances were to be Energy Star rated and all building materials, other than reclaimed original elements, were to be GREENGUARD certified. Mirage distressed wood flooring, Degree recycled ceramic tile, Eco Terra countertops, and FSC Certified cabinetry are a few of the featured materials.
Our team began by removing the dividing walls creating an open floor plan that allows the entire family or social gathering to share a single space without feeling cramped.
In the kitchen, we installed ample counter space, stainless appliances, and a central island with a deep undermounted sink in order to create an ideal cooking area for the home chef. We then gave this kitchen the sunny glow of a Cape Cod cottage with Beadboard cabinets and a terracotta tile backsplash.
Finally, our expert craftsmen restored much of the original Victorian woodwork, including a built in cabinet, stairs, mantle and mosaic entryway, back to its original glory.
